Onism is the awareness of how little of the world you will get to experience. This blog will follow my adventures as I see as much of this world as I can. I hope to let you experience these adventures through this digital ink and encourage you to get up and travel as well. So for the time being sit back, relax, and read on.

Fighting Onism

Onism Explained

Updated: Sep 29, 2018

Onism is being aware of how little of the world you will experience. The dictionary of obscure sorrows, yes that is a thing, explains it like this:

onism - n. the frustration of being stuck in just one body, that inhabits only one place at a time, which is like standing in front of the departures screen at an airport, flickering over with strange place names like other people's passwords, each representing one more thing you'll never get to see before you die-and all because, as the arrow on the map helpfully points out, you are here.

It is that dread that no matter how much you travel, the amount of land or sea you cover, you can never experience everything. You are after all just one person.

I consider myself a traveler. I love experiencing new places, revisiting places several times, and dreaming about where I should go next (and how to afford it). In the grand scheme of things I've covered almost no ground. Maybe 13 states and 3 countries outside of the US. Not only have I seen very few places in the world I've only experienced 1 percent of what is available in those places. Take home for example, I have lived here in Baton Rouge, LA for 26 years, give or take the few years combined within Kentucky and Florida. I have yet to eat at every restaurant and with a new one opening every day there's no way I ever will. That's ONE city and I've been here a quarter of a century. To take it even further I have been to Disney World around 20 times now. Despite the number of visits I have maybe experienced half of what Disney has to offer...

I can see this manifested in other aspects of my life as well. For example Jesus told us to go into the world and make disciples. There are 7.6 billion people in the world and only 31% are Christian... That leaves 5.2 billion people to be reached... There is no way...

Despite the awareness that I will never experience all the world has to offer and despite the fact that I will never reach every non-christian, I have a thirst to see as much of the world as I can. I have a need to spread the gospel. Missions allow me to follow both of these passions. I may never see the whole world or witness to every person but I will see what I can and meet who I can. I am very excited to begin to share these travels with you. See you at the next destination.
